Method and definitions
Source: the official bulletin of civil and commercial announcements (BODACC), published by the French legal information directorate under the Open Licence. Every opening judgment of a safeguard, receivership or court liquidation is published there a few days after the court's decision.
Counting: an opening is counted on its BODACC publication day, once per company and per procedure. Corrective notices, claim statements, approved plans and closings are not counted. Direct liquidations are those opened without prior receivership; conversions of receiverships into liquidations are not in this series.
Geography: the department and region are those of the publishing registry, usually the head office's. Overseas territories appear in the tables and not on the map.
Sectors: the NAF code is not published in the BODACC; it is retrieved from the national company register for the openings of the last 90 days. Shares are computed on that sample, shown above the list.
Reading: a year-on-year rise in openings in a department signals a local downturn six to twelve months ahead of employment. The ratio of direct liquidations to receiverships measures companies' ability to reach the court before cash runs out completely. The series can be downloaded as CSV for your own analyses.
